Common Sites for Pressure Ulcers

Pressure ulcers are commonly known as bedsores which is caused by prolonged pressure on the skin and damages the underlying tissues. Most pressure ulcers develop on the skin covering a bony part of the body. For premed and prenursing students, the following are the bony areas of the body that pressure ulcers are most likely to develop.

  • occipital bone
  • spine of the scapula
  • olecranon process
  • sacrum
  • coccyx
  • ischial tuberosity
  • greater trochanter
  • calcaneus
  • lateral and medial malleolus
  • medial condyle of tibia
