The following is a list of human body landmarks and how each area is used in a clinical or medical settings.

clavicle – this body feature is used to locate the subclavian vein which a central intravenous catheter can be inserted

xiphoid process – this body feature is used for positioning the stethoscope to auscultate the tricuspid valve of the heart

greater trochanter, anterior superior iliac spine, iliac crest – this body feature is used to locate intramuscular injections in the hip

anterior superior iliac spine – this body feature is used to locate McBurney’s point for the evaulation of appendicitis

sternal angle – this body feature is used to locate correct CPR position

spinous process – this body feature is used to locate areas for lumbar punctures and epidurals

greater tubercle, deltoid tuberosity – this body feature is used to locate intramuscular injections in the shoulder

inferior costal margin – this body feature is used for the assessment of internal organ pathology

styloid process of radius – this body feature is used to locate radial pulse

supraorbital ridge, zygomatic bone – this body feature is used to palpate and assess sinus infection

sternum, clavicle, scapula, spinous processes of vertebra – this body feature is used to locate the midsternal, midclavicular, scapular, and vertebral lines of the thorax

medial malleolus – this body feature is used to locate tibial pulse

posterior superior iliac spine – this body feature is used as an area of bone marrow biopsy

spinal curvature – this body feature is used for the assessment of lordosis and kyphosis

pubic symphysis – this body feature is used to locate incision for placing suprapubic bladder drainage catheter

olecranon process – this body feature is used to locate tendons of triceps for testing reflexes

patella – this body feature is used to locate tendons of patella for testing reflexes

any bony points at joints – this body feature is used to assess joint health
